Flying Samaritans at UCLA

Goals For The Future

  • Perform a comprehensive community health assessment
  • Build a playground and exercise area to increase mental health in the community
  • Create a network of external medical resources that community members have access to year-round
  • Continue to improve the quality of medical care offered to patients

Uprooted from their homes due to massive destruction from flooding, hundreds of families were placed in the small community of Colonia Margarita Moran. Today, they have little more than a roof above their heads. This underserved population located near the outskirts of Tijuana, Mexico lacks the means of meeting its most essential needs: food on the table, clothing for the cold winter, and basic health care. A local charitable foundation does its best to provide this community with food and clothing. However, Colonia Margarita Moran is in dire need of medical aid, so this local foundation reached out and asked the Flying Samaritans to provide health care for the community. After hearing about the community’s unfortunate conditions and visiting the small town, this became an exigent matter to Flying Samaritans at UCLA. Strengthening access to healthcare and improving the quality of living in Colonia Margarita Moran became our mission. Now that we have become more familiar with the community, we have expanded the original goal and better understand the significance of our immediate action in helping them. Not only do we want to deliver quality medical care to the people, but also empower them with the knowledge of providing and leading healthy lives for themselves and their families.
